Unscheduled Activities to do during your visit to Nauvoo
Nauvoo and the surrounding area has so much to offer! We hope that you will participate in the planned activities of the conference, but if you are coming EARLY or are STAYING and extra day or two or are just looking for things to do during free time that aren't in the scheduled events above, here are some of the available options you may choose to participate in.

Oxen Rides
- 10am-3pm (Mon-Sat, 1st come, 1st served)
Oxen rides are available on a first-come-first-served basis, with a limit of 8 seats per ride. Reservations are not available. The ride is short and other group members can find interesting facts about history and about the oxen on nearby reader boards while they wait. The ride is located just to the northwest of the Visitors’ Center.

Wagon & Carriage Rides

The Wagon Tour provides an overview of Nauvoo Historic Sites and begins on the west side of Main Street, south of the Family Living Center. The Carriage Tour takes visitors a short distance into the countryside while guides share faith-promoting stories about the past. This tour begins on the northeast side of the Visitors’ Center. Reservations are required for both tours. Each person may reserve up to 5 tickets but no more. Tickets expire if the holder is not in line 10 minutes before the wagon departs. Those with expired tickets may get in the back of the standby line. Large groups should consider splitting up into different wagon times. ​

Carthage is located approximately 23 miles from Nauvoo. Be sure to plan for travel time and waiting time to take a tour of the jail. Some days, the wait could be long. Tours are 30 minutes long and begin every 15 minutes. Tour size is limited to 15 individuals.

Nauvoo State Park Trails-link to park
At 1.5 miles, the park's main trail, Locust Lane, shows off some of the park's best features. As the trail winds around the lake and through timbered areas, hikers can see and hear a variety of birds .Visitors also will enjoy the 3/8-mile accessible loop trail from the campground. A short trail connects the main picnic and playground area to the dam, and a short, one-way trail lead's hikers to Gilligan's Island on Lake Horton.

Joseph Smiths Red Brick Store
Admission to the Visitor Center, site orientation video, museum exhibits, and Red Brick Store is free. There is a $4.00 preservation fee per person for the guided tour of the Smith homes.
